Delaney’s and Colin’s favorite books

Delaney’s favorite books:

The Dot by Peter Reynolds This is an excellent book! Delaney can recite it word for word almost.

Fraggle Rock series We have an entire collection of these books - I think about 12 in all. Delaney really enjoys them! It’s like watching the old cartoon, but in book form. Chris enjoys reading them to her, thank goodness! I wasn’t fond of the cartoon, and I’m less fond of the books.

Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey An all time favorite.

Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann Both kids really like this book.

Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter We have exactly four copies of this book. Two are the original words of Beatrix Potter and two are modernized/Americanized versions. She doesn’t care - any Peter Rabbit will do.

Seasons in Fern Hollow by John Patience This is probably long-since out of print. This was one of my books as a child, but Delaney really enjoys it. It’s the first “chapter book” we’ve read together.

Amelia Bedelia series. I’m not crazy about AB, bit Delaney likes them. We need to find some on CD for her to listen to during her rest. It’s quite stereotypical - and I don’t mean in a good way! Peggy Parrish is from Louisiana, and the “red neck, uneducated, country gal” is a little overwhelming in the character of the housekeeper Amelia Bedelia for my tastes.

Delaney is really into seek-and-find books. She’s actually quite good at finding Waldo amongst chaos. She has several of this type of books and enjoys looking at them together.

Other Stories Delaney likes (but on CD, not books)

Seal Maiden by Karen Casey Delaney absolutely LOVES this story. She listens to it often on CD while “resting” in the afternoon.

Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel

Colin’s favorite books:

Counting Colors by Roger Priddy

Brown Bear Brown Bear What do you See?; Panda Bear Panda Bear What do you See?; and Polar Bear Polar Bear What do you Hear? by Bill Martin Jr, illustrated by Eric Carle Colin is really into anything Eric Carle. He can appreciate the art.

My favorite books to read to the kids:

Child of Faerie, Child of Earth by Jane Yolen I absolutely love this book. Delaney likes it, but doesn’t love it. But she lets me read it to her often.

The Earth is Good by Michael Dumunn Delaney enjoys this book, too.

Jack Prelutsky poems. We have several of his books. The kids do like Ride a Purple Pelican, but some of his other books are a little too old for them. One day…

Books I’d like:

But No Elephants! by Jerry Smath I had this book as a child, and I’d like it for our children.

Barefoot Book of Faeries I’m cheating because I have this on backorder from Barefoot Books. I can’t wait to get it!

And not one single Dora book!! I could vomit Dora. Sometimes I want to vomit *on* Dora.

Let’s see… Abby’s fav? She seems to always bring me one of her lift the flap books. There’s a sign language lift the flap, a baby-body-parts lift the flap (Where is baby’s belly button? Lift the flap that is her shirt and say “it’s under her shirt!” kind of thing), a Little People lift the flap… Her favorite part of “reading” is turning the pages, so I guess getting to lift the flap on each page is like a little bonus page to ‘turn’ or manipulate. “Bonus!”

Wow, well you know me and books. So to pick a favorite….too hard even to come up with a list would take me forever. Now Discovery Toys now has the Do Re You and me set of books that come with cd’s which tell the story then have wonderful fun music that relates to the story. WE LOVE THEM (yes we are a little bias since I sell them. :) )
