Surgery! Surgery!! Surgery!!!

Yesterday: three health “crises”

First, Chris…Chris has DeQuarvains, which is basically tendinitis of his wrist. He has had two past surgeries and a myriad of treatments, but continues to have severe pain and swelling. The doc wants to do surgery…again… Chris isn’t so sure. Basically this would be a “cut open your wrist and check it out” surgery. They have no idea what’s going on or if a third surgery will do anything. He already has permanent partial disability in his right wrist. Instead of the drastic surgery approach, Chris is now on leave from work for four weeks. Which means he’ll be in my hair, screwing up our routine for four weeks. I couldn’t be happier!

A few hours later…Tara… I also had an appointment at the hand doctor for my carpal tunnel, which is raging like a fire storm these days. Almost as soon as the doc walked into the room, he said, “You know what I’m going to say.” I had been hoping to avoid surgery…I’m weird like that…but it looks like it’s really the only way to go. I’m not even 30 and I have pretty severe pain and am heading toward nerve damage. I figure carpal tunnel release will run us about $1500.

Then evening rolls around…Colin I changed Colin’s diaper last night at 5:51 p.m. - he was a stink-man. I looked down to clean him up, and FREAKED OUT! His scrotum was HUGELY SWOLLEN! It was over twice it’s normal size. Enter the freak out…still freaking…still freaking. OK, so I called the emergency nurse line, who paged my doctor. (I’m still freaking a little at this point). No, Colin is not in pain; no, he’s not acting weird; yes, it’s greater on one side than the other; no, it’s not his testicle (THANK GODDESS!); yes, it moves a little when I push on it; yes, it is about the size of a large peach pit. The over-the-phone diagnosis? An inguinal hernia. Treatment? Surgery. I am counting the seconds to get Colin to the doctor on Monday to have him take a look at it. I’m absolutely, totally and completely psychotic about this!

So that’s the scoop! Who knows what will happen. I am guessing that Chris will dodge surgery if at all possible; I will eventually have carpal tunnel surgery; and Colin will see a specialist or two to give a solid diagnosis (not this over-the-phone crap) and will ultimately have surgery to have the muscle repaired. I don’t know when this will be, but I’m certain it won’t clear up on it’s own…none of our problems will.

By the way, Delaney is fine. Great, even. Healthy as any healthy three year old. Let’s keep it like that, K? These medical bills are going to put us in the poor-house!

Good Grief!!! I feel your pain, well not litteraly, but when it rains it pours. We have been dealing with house crisis after house crisis every Sat. for the last 2 almost 3 months now. Most of them minor…toilet seat breaking and such, but then there is the leak that is dripping and showing up on our living room ceiling, so yes, when it rains it pours. I hope Delaney stays healthy and everything else turns out ok. Hugs to you all!
