Update on Colin
Our doctor is pretty sure it is an inguinal hernia. We are taking him to a pediatric surgeon on May 1. I’m still VERY worried, but the complications of this condition are rare (according to my doctor), so I’m not as psychotic about check his parts every five minutes!
Following this visit, we will probably schedule a surgery to get the hernia fixed. It’s a straight-forward procedure and is fairly common. To me, the worst part will be the anesthesia!
So my biggest worry at this point? Keeping him from nursing after midnight the day of his surgery! How the heck am I supposed to do that? Guess we’ll be getting up at 4 a.m. that day, trying to comfort a screaming child who desperately wants to nurse. I CAN’T WAIT…ha!

I am so glad that it isn’t something likely to complicate. I can only imagine your worry though, even knowing that he will be fine.

They worry about vomiting during the surgery. I wonder if they would let you pump before you nursed him so you were just about empty so that he didn’t have a full belly, but was comforted.
I did that with Jackie when she was small, well not pumped, but manually expressed. She got a few drops, nothing that would concern them, but she got to comfort nurse for some time.

Remember that breastmilk takes less than 4 hours to fully digest, and most surgeons don’t know that… so, when Hannah had anesthesia for her ear tubes, I nursed her up until 4 hours prior. Good luck, I know how scary that it!!!

Tara, thanks so much for keeping us all updated. I am so sorry to hear that he will be needing surgery. What a yucky time for you all. I am sure everything will go super-well. Keep us informed. I am with Brooke on this one also…I say go for the nursing…they will NEVER know!
